Tech websites get poor CTR

Posted under My Sites, Webmaster Tips on August 9

This actually really annoys me but is quite understandable. Tech blogs and webmaster related websites are designed for an audience which are used to using the internet. People who are used to using the internet are aware of what is and what isn’t advertising. They are aware of the tricks used to blend advertising and then so don’t click them. If you are looking to set up a blog I would suggest blogging about something which appeals to people who may not be so “ad aware”.

I will quickly give you an example. I have a website which I set up for my mum a while ago. The website is http://www.perfectplanters.org.uk The website has one google adsense unit on the homepage. It is also a reasonable way down the page. Despite this the website has a CTR 5 times greater than my webmaster related sites. This is for the simple reason that the website is for people interested in gardening. People interested in gardening aren’t likely to use the internet as much as people interested in this blog. They therefore are more likely to click an ad, not knowing that it is an ad.

There are ways to improve CTR with google adsense. These can be placement or making them relevant. Both these can improve your CTR. I have experimented with my various webmaster sites but still cannot get a CTR of any decent amount. I therefore don’t make much money from adsense and need to think of a new way to monetize the websites.

  1. I knew the former owner of wmseo.com before he sold it (stupid move). Now, his site was rocketing and the ctr was quite good. Not sure why though. I think content may have been the major factor.

  2. I’m glad my last comment inspired you to write this post! haha. This is the exact reason that I’m reluctant to create tech-related websites!!

  3. Just like I said in the post before this, I use kontera for advertisements. Check it out :)
