Guide to Submitting to Directories

Posted under Web Newbies, Webmaster Tips on August 12

Submitting to directories is a great way to build links to your website. With submitting to directories and some minor backlink building you can get your website to PR4 and ranking well in search engines. I will run through a quick guide to submitting to directories. I have managed to submit to 139 directories in two days (A couple hours a day).

My first tip to people is not to do too much at a time because its extremely boring. I suggest doing a letter a day. This means you will submit to all the A directories then all the B. I also suggest submitting to the pr0 and pr1 directories because this suggests they are new. If they get popular you will have had a link there for a while already and are more likely to be displayed high up. If the sites also get PR later on in their life you will already be there to take advantage.

The directory list which I work from is a spreadsheet which can be downloaded from http://info.vilesilencer.com. Another resource which I use is roboform. Its a toolbar which can be downloaded from most popular download sites. Just give it a search.

The first thing to do is to set up your roboform. Install roboform to your browser then go to identities and edit your details. Put your name, contact email, website url and any other details for your website. In the custom fields create description, title and keywords. Fill them in with your website details. You may also want to put a copy in a text document to easily copy from if the roboform doesn’t fill in.

With roboform the submission process is pretty simple but still takes a while. Open up the spreadsheet and click the first directory url. On the directory navigate to the section most appropriate and click fill forms from the roboform toolbar. This should fill in all your website details. Make sure they are in the correct fields and if so click submit. Its that simple (some sites make require validation code).

I suggest you submit to all the general website directories first then move onto the niche directories for your niche. Some things to note. Some directories take a while to approve your link so be patient. Also I would advice setting up a domain forwarder for your domain to a made up email account so you can receive all the directory submission emails into one account (some directories require youremail@youdomain.com).

If you don’t want to go through the directory submission process yourself there are many submission services offered. So just search around or visit http://forums.digitalpoint.com if you are interested.

  1. I have submitted to a few directories, but as you mention, it is SO boring!! Also I find that, although the Directory itself can have a high PR, sometimes the page where your site is listed will have PR0. I guess over time the PR would be spread amongst the sub pages though.

  2. Yes. It is time consuming for sure. However, there is a great directory submission service available at http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=413320

Looks to be good value. Enjoy. :)

  3. DigiXMas’s submitter is a great tool aswell :)
If you could find a poetry related niche though I would have to bow down at your knees because I’ve had no luck yet.
